Joan as Police Woman

Joan as Police Woman

11 October 2024

Joan Wasser aka Joan as Police Woman has been creating and performing music for three decades.  This rare appearance sees Wasser performing songs from her forthcoming new album. Support comes from Welsh art-rock quartet Islet.

Born in 1970, Joan As Police Woman grew up with her adoptive family in Connecticut, until moving to Brooklyn to join the music scene of that era. She has solid foundations. She studied violin at the university and played in an orchestra. In 1994 in New York she began performing with art/punk bands, experimenting with the parameters of the sound of his violin. She then began working as a session musician with Antony and the Johnsons and Rufus Wainwright then Lou Reed, Beck, Toshi Reagon, David Sylvian, Sparklehorse, Laurie Anderson and Damon Albarn.

Lately she has worked with Sufjan Stevens, John Cale, Aldous Harding, Woodkid, Justin Vivian Bond, RZA, Norah Jones and Daniel Johnston and also produced Lau's album which won an award for its Scottish avant-folk.

Joan As Police Woman is a project born in 2002 and named in homage to the star of police TV shows Angie Dickinson. Her previous albums have been acclaimed by audiences and critics and have won awards including the Independent Music Awards (Real Life) and Q Magazine's Album of the Year (To Survive).

Islet

Islet is a Welsh quartet whose free-spirited invention and exuberant intensity is hypnotic, exhilarating and defiantly unique.

Formed in Cardiff in 2009 by Emma Deman and brothers Mark and John ‘JT’ Thomas and joined soon after by Alex Williams, the band are known for their genre-bending sound and energetic and joyful live shows.

Islet is all about being subsumed in sound, with a fierce urge to challenge, to embrace, communicate, excite and, ultimately, set their audience free. They are following their own course, awash with synthesisers with a rhythmic pulse creating a delicate balance between repetition, volume and the romance of time, an ecstatic experience through music.

Their fourth album Soft Fascination was released last year on Fire Records.
