Llais for free or on a budget

Llais festival is here, and there’s something for everybody within its eclectic line-up. With free events, a multi-buy deal and all tickets under £30, there’s also something for every budget.

 

IMMERSIVE EVENTS UNDER £5

9 – 13 October, 11am – 6pm (Duration: 40 minutes)
Tickets available on arrival on a pay what you can basis.

A beautifully made guidebook prompts you to explore the city, choosing your own route, while headphones with customised electronics capture and manipulate the sounds around you. Pick up your headphones from Bocs and drop them back at Bocs to a member of staff when you're done. 

STREET ART OPERAS

Outside | £5 | 10 – 13 October, 7.30pm, 8.30pm + 9.30pm (Duration 20 minutes)

Created to be projected onto a wall, using the impact and language of Street Art but animated as operatic storytelling in music and listened to on Silent Disco Headphones. Imagine a Banksy coming to life and singing!

These performances will take place outside Caffi.

Based on idea by Jude Price (Cult of Doris) and developed in collaboration with Wales Millennium Centre, The Cab in Newport and Efa Supertramp, Nanna Punk sessions are for women over 50 years old to socialise and develop their punk music skills. Come along to their live performances on Friday and Sunday to see what they’ve been working on!

Chris Hodgkins, renowned jazz trumpeter and former Vic Parker mentee, in conversation with Humie Webbe

A brief introduction about Vic, his background and early career, including Chris’ time with him at the Quebec and various anecdotes tied to his recent compositions. Hear the compositions and see Chris perform as part of A Celebration of Bay Jazz on Saturday and Sunday.

A talk with Gaynor Legall, Chair of Tiger Bay and the World about the forgotten musicians, vocalists and bands whose origins or connections are steeped in the Tiger Bay and Cardiff Docklands Community - including local icons such as Patti Flynn, Vic Parker and The Denise Brothers to name a few.

A collaboration between nu-jazz duo BIGHEADMODE (Robbie and Ewan Moore) and Plumm, a distinguished multi-instrumentalist bandleader based in South London. Together, they have sculpted a captivating suite inspired by the legendary Midlands band, Black Sabbath.

LLWCH A LLECHI: GWEN SIÔN WITH BBC NATIONAL ORCHESTRA OF WALES + CÔR Y PENRHYN

Premiering at Llais 2024, Llwch a Llechi (Dust and Slate) is a live audio-visual project exploring connections between music, landscape, tradition and ritual. Gwen will be joined by an ensemble of 10 BBC National Orchestra of Wales musicians and Côr y Penrhyn, one of Wales’ oldest choirs.

 

LLEUWEN STEFFAN: TAFOD ARIAN

In Tafod Arian, renowned folk singer Lleuwen Steffan shines a new light on a trove of hymns once banned by the all-male chapel committees of our past.

 

THE BREATH

Ríoghnach Connolly and Stuart McCallum are the creative heart of The Breath. Connolly's deeply soulful, stop-you-in-your-tracks voice joins with Stuart’s understated brilliance, giving rise to honest, personal, heartfelt songs.

 

COLORED: THE UNSUNG LIFE OF CLAUDETTE COLVIN (IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE)

Colored allows the audience to enter a setting that will soon be haunted by the ghosts of 1950s Alabama. In a set specially designed for the experience, iconic scenes from Claudette Colvin's life during her fight for civil rights are replayed before your very eyes.

 

FABIANA PALLADINO

Weston Studio | £12.50 | Saturday 12 October, 9.30pm

Fabiana Palladino broke out in 2017 as one of the Paul Institute’s founding artists after her R&B influenced pop reached Jai Paul, who started the label alongside his brother. The world is sitting up and taking notice of Fabiana’s sublime pop innovation, this is an opportunity for you to find out why.
